We Dream With Strength and Courage and Together We Succeed

The South Coast Prevention Partnership invites you to join us  for our second Community Art Mural Display Celebration on February 12th, 2013. The mural will be unveiled at 5:00PM on the far East Side of the building at  8865 La Honda Road, La Honda CA, with light refreshments immediately following  in the La Honda Puente Office, Suite #4. Please join the celebration to view our second youth driven community art project designed by Jovany Rios and painted by youth in our community.

The South Coast Prevention Partnership celebrated the hanging of our Community mural on Monday October 15, 2012 at the Taqueria Los Amigos 1999 Pescadero Creek Road Pescadero, CA. We had a nice turnout of youth, parents, other adults, law enforcement, PMAC members, business owners, non-profits, and school administration to the unveiling. If you haven’t had a chance to see the mural, please visit the taqueria and take a moment to appreciate all the hard work and talent that went into this youth driven community mural.

About Community Art Project:

The community art project was designed to address negative graffiti and to reduce alcohol and drug use within the identified areas. The intent in implementing a community mural project is to involve adult community members and to recruit youth involved in the negative graffiti to take ownership of a mural that, in turn, would promote a message of community respect and wellness. Youth and community members have begun a dialogue around healthy messages, environments, laws and policies for public art. Together the South Coast Prevention Partnership has developed the following elements.

Photo voice: Youth developed a photo display that visually exposed the negative graffiti and exemplifies the potential of graffiti art.

Public Opinion Survey: A community survey to identify community perception and readiness for change.

Youth-driven focus groups: To develop vision and themes of community mural.

Community field trip: San Francisco’s Mission District, Precita Eyes Mural Resource Center.

South Coast Prevention Partnership identified the following themes for murals and developed sketches around them:

WE DREAM WITH STRENGTH AND COURAGE AND TOGETHER WE  SUCCEED.

WE ARE HEALTHY AND UNITED, WE DREAM WITH STRENGTH AND COURAGE AND TOGETHER WE SUCCEED.

The unveiling of the community mural on Friday August 17, 2012 at the Pescadero I.D.E.S. Hall was a big success, with over 300 in attendance. The mural was also on view all weekend at the I.D.E.S. Hall during the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival. This inspirational mural was designed by Jovany Rios and painted by youth in our South Coast Community. There is an article and picture in the Half Moon Bay Review (8/22) and also on the Puente Facebook page. Be sure to check it out!
