Census Coordinator

Position title: Census Coordinator
Classification: Non-Exempt, Part-Time, Temporary Position
Reports to: Safety Net Services Manager
Date: September 2019
Hourly Rate: $20 – 22, depending on experience 

Position summary 

The Census Coordinator provides day-to-day direct census-related support services to residents of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar, and San Gregorio. The Census Coordinator will play a pivotal role in activating and empowering local residents, especially in hard to count neighborhoods, to be more accurately counted in the census and better understand the value of civic engagement. The position is anticipated to run from September 2019 to August 2020. 

Essential Job Responsibilities 

  • Identify, establish and cultivate relationships with community and government partners 
  • Coordinate implementation of coastwide census plan, including distributing educational materials, hosting community events, and organizing census assistance appointments 
  • Track and compile data from multiple project sites 
  • Supervise 4 short-term project staff 
  • Communicate effectively in a manner that promotes trust and cooperation 
  • Complete thorough and accurate documentation of contact with program participants, property owners, and other social services agencies and programs as soon as possible following contact 
  • Maintain current knowledge of and working relationships with community resources and social service providers 
  • Assists in the development of all activities regarding the 2020 Census 
  • Composes public information material to promote current, on-going and upcoming events, as well as monitors outgoing media and social media material 
  • Participate in outreach and community events, as needed 
  • Work with Economic Security Manager to identify program outcomes and outputs 
  • Supports Economic Security Manager to compile data and communicate information to collaboration partners, stakeholders and community members to engage new partners and sustain relationships and funding for this project 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services or related field or relevant combination of education and experience 
  • Ability to organize tasks and people in an efficient manner 
  • Proficiency in translating English to Spanish and Spanish to English 
  • Current California Driver’s License and ability to drive to work related functions in and around Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar and San Gregorio/Southern San Mateo County area

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish 
  • Cultural competency to work with residents from diverse backgrounds across boundaries of class, race, and inequality issues 
  • Knowledge of the South Coast or experience working in a rural community, preferred 
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as needed 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
