A message of inclusion, unity and diversity on this 4th of July
Today’s celebration has a special meaning for many immigrants that have acquired U.S. citizenship. At Puente, we know many of them because we have supported them every step of the way from their application to their oath ceremony, as part of Puente’s Immigration Services Program.
Becoming a U.S. citizen is, for many immigrants, the last step of a long immigration journey. In the past year, Puente has seen citizenship applications spike. Adding to this growth, we are currently in the midst of a citizenship campaign since under the new administration, being a green card holder is not as reassuring as it was before. To put it in perspective, Puente has processed 47 citizenship applications in the past eight years. Our current campaign will serve nearly 60 residents in the next year. Mexican, Canadian and UK citizens living on the South Coast have attended our clinics to learn about the requirements, get materials to study for the English and Civic Tests and learn what the interview is like. Dozens of volunteers have signed up to help them prepare. The campaign has become a community effort.
It is common for volunteer tutors to become close to their students. In many cases, they attend their tutees Citizenship Oath Ceremony. Some new citizens later become tutors and help others prepare for this process.
Applying for citizenship is costly. When a low-income family uses 80% of their earned income to pay rent, paying the $725 application fee can be a challenge. With foundation support, Puente has a loan program to eliminate the cost barrier. This way, the applicant can focus on preparing for the tests while paying back the loan in small installments. The revolving fund has supported many to make the decision to apply and not wait until they have all the money saved.
Attending a Citizenship Oath Ceremony is a memorable experience. When I attended mine, I was taken aback by the warm welcome the more than 600 new citizens from 42 different nations received that day from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization office representative. A huge screen displayed a video with a message of inclusion, unity and celebration of diversity of cultures. I felt proud of becoming a U.S. citizen and while reciting the oath, it was extremely hard to contain my emotions.
This 4th of July, many immigrants will take part in the celebrations with special pride since they had to work so hard to gain their U.S. citizenship. Today we celebrate with them and with all of you. The 4th of July gives us an opportunity to recognize the many immigrants that contribute to the country with their sweat, work, faith, food, and culture. Unfortunately, this also continues to be a time for all of us to stand up for health care for all, fair immigration policies, and most of all unity and respect for one another.

Un mensaje de inclusión,unidad y diversidad este 4 de julio
La celebración de hoy tiene un significado especial para muchos inmigrantes que han adquirido su ciudadanía estadounidense. En Puente, conocemos a muchos de ellos porque los hemos apoyado en cada paso de este proceso, desde la preparación de su solicitud hasta la ceremonia de juramento. Todo gracias al programa de servicios de inmigración.
Convertirse en ciudadano americano es, para muchos inmigrantes, el último paso de una larga jornada. El año pasado, Puente notó un aumento de solicitudes. Y estos números continuarán subiendo. En Puente estamos en medio de una campaña de ciudadanía ya que desde la nueva administración tomó poder sabemos que tener la residencia permanente no es suficiente. Para darle perspectiva al tema, Puente ha procesado 47 solicitudes de ciudadanía en los últimos 8 años. Nuestra campaña actual prepararé a 60 residentes el próximo año. Ciudadanos mexicanos, canadienses, y del Reino Unido viviendo en la costa sur han participado en nuestras clínicas para aprender acerca de los requisitos, obtener materiales para repasar el inglés y las preguntas del examen de cívico, y para enterarse como es una entrevista de naturalización. Docenas de voluntarios se han inscrito para hacerse tutores y ayudar a prepararlos. La campaña ha sido un esfuerzo comunitario.
Es común que un tutor se acerque a su estudiante. En muchos casos, han acompañado a sus estudiantes a su ceremonia de juramento. Nuevos ciudadanos, después se convierten en tutores también y ayudan a otros a preparase para este proceso.
Aplicar para la ciudadanía es costoso. Cuando una familia de bajos ingresos utiliza el 80% de sus ingresos para la renta, reunir los 725 dólares es una barrera. Con el apoyo de fundaciones, Puente comenzó un programa de préstamo para eliminar esa barrera. De este modo, la persona se puede enfocar en su preparación para el examen de ciudadanía y la a vez puede hacer pagos pequeños a largo plazo. Estos fondos rotarios han apoyado a muchos a tomar ese paso tan significante sin tener que esperar hasta que tengan todo el dinero ahorrado.
Ver una ceremonia de ciudadanía es una experiencia inolvidable. Cuando asistí a la mía, estaba emocionada por la cálida bienvenida a los más de 600 nuevos ciudadanos de 42 países por parte de los oficiales del departamento de inmigración de los estados unidos. Una pantalla enorme enseñaba un video con un mensaje de inclusión, unidad, y una celebración de la diversidad de las culturas. Me sentí orgullosa de convertirme en ciudadana estadounidense y fue muy conmovedor cuando llegó la hora de hacer el juramento.
Este 4 de julio, muchos inmigrantes participarán en estas celebraciones con un orgullo muy especial porque han trabajado mucho por lograr su ciudanía. Hoy celebramos juntos. El 4 de julio nos da la oportunidad de reconocer que muchos inmigrantes aportan al país con su sudor, trabajo, fe, comida, y cultura. Este tiempo, desafortunadamente, continúa siendo el tiempo para unirnos y luchar para el acceso a servicios de salud, prácticas y leyes justas para los inmigrantes, y sobre todo la unidad y el respeto entre todos.
