A teacher’s commitment to honoring culture. El compromiso de una maestra para honrar la cultura.

 

As the lead teacher of the bilingual family cooperative Sueños Unidos/United Dreams at Puente I am proud to be part of the children’s healthy development. I am honored to see them grow and learn new academic skills that will not only help them with their school readiness but will also equip them with social and emotional skills.  At Sueños Unidos, we advocate for the rights of children and their families. We are together in this partnership — parents, teachers and children — in favor of a world in which each child is protected and respected, as it is.

Last year was my first time participating at Día de Los Niños/Children’s Day. I hosted a peace flag-making activity. I provided the children with small pieces of cloth and markers. As children joined the activity, I asked them what peace meant to them and asked them to draw it in their flags. It was very significant to see the drawings of the children captured in the fabric. Through their drawings, they were able to express their values, customs, and what peace meant to them.

What I love about Día de los Niños/Children’s Day is that all children get to take home free books. As children received their books, it was gratifying to see their faces full of excitement. I noticed their love for literature and it filled my soul with joy. Another aspect of this celebration that delighted me was the Ballet Folklórico dances. The community’s Ballet group performed at this event. As we were watching them dance, there was a mutual connection among all present (all ages). It was great to see children dancing in their traditional attire representing different regions of Mexican dances. For this reason, it fills me with emotion and gratitude to be part of Día de Los Niños.

El compromiso de una maestra para honrar la cultura

Como maestra líder de la cooperativa familiar bilingüe Sueños Unidos/United Dreams en Puente, me enorgullece ser parte del desarrollo saludable de los niños. Me siento honrada de verlos crecer y aprender nuevas habilidades académicas que no solo los ayudarán con su preparación para la escuela, sino que también los equiparán con habilidades sociales y emocionales. En Sueños Unidos, defendemos los derechos de los niños y sus familias. Estamos juntos en esta asociación, padres, maestros y niños, a favor de un mundo en el que cada niño sea protegido y respetado, tal como es.

Es muy importante para mí participar en la celebración del Día de los Niños / Children’s Day. Este día nos brinda la oportunidad de honrar a nuestros niños y celebrar juntos sus talentos, creatividad y, lo más importante, su cultura hogareña. A través de las artes y artesanías y las actividades científicas, despertamos su imaginación y atraemos sus habilidades de exploración. Esta celebración honra la cultura de la comunidad. Abarca la diversidad de Pescadero e incluye a todas las familias.

El año pasado fue la primera vez que participé en este evento. Organicé una actividad de fabricación de banderas de paz. Proporcioné a los niños pequeños trozos de tela y marcadores. Cuando los niños se unieron a la actividad, les pregunté qué significaba para ellos la paz y les pedí que dibujasen sus banderas. Fue muy significativo ver los dibujos de los niños capturados en la tela. A través de sus dibujos, pudieron expresar sus valores, costumbres y lo que la paz significaba para ellos. Lo que me gusta de Día de los Niños es que todos los niños se lleven libros gratis a casa. Cuando los niños recibieron sus libros, fue gratificante ver sus caras llenas de alegría y emoción. Noté su amor por la literatura y llenó mi alma de alegría. Otro aspecto de esta celebración que me deleitó fue el Ballet Folklórico. El grupo de Ballet de la comunidad se presentó en este evento. Mientras los observábamos bailar había una conexión mutua entre todos los presentes (mayores y jóvenes). Fue genial ver a los niños bailando en su atuendo tradicional representando diferentes regiones de la danza mexicana. Por esta razón, me llena de emoción y gratitud el ser parte de Día de Los Niños.

Tax returns prepared for free at Puente

It is time to bring thousands of dollars back into our community. At Puente, we are excited to be offering FREE tax services again this year!

For the past 11 years, Puente has offered free tax return preparation to the people of the South Coast. Over the years, the program has brought $794,475 in federal and state refunds. This year, Puente is providing this service to families and individuals earning $54,000 or less. Typically, this service will cost around $160 dollars when provided by a private tax preparer. Puente’s IRS certified staff provide this service, which insures that the taxpayer will receive a thorough review of their earned income as well as appropriate information regarding their filing category.

Last week Omar Ortega, Community Resource Navigator, helped a mother of one complete her taxes. Bianca [name changed to protect privacy] visited an office in Watsonville to complete her tax returns in previous years. This was her first year filling at Puente. When Bianca sat down with Omar for her initial interview, she felt very comfortable after understanding why the questions were asked. She had no idea just how many different deductions could be included in her taxes. Bianca had built up some debt over the holiday season. With her $5,900 refund, she will pay her credit cards and with the remainder will start a savings account for her son. Puente also provides basic financial literacy during our tax interviews and helps community members set goals for savings.

Our goal is to help file 100 tax returns this year. In the eleven years of this program, 2017 was the only one where the number of people filing went down at Puente and throughout the Bay Area. Undocumented taxpayers became concerned that the IRS would share information with the Department of Homeland Security and lead to deportation.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation and United Way of the Bay Area provide funding for this service.

Preparación de impuestos gratis en Puente

¡Es tiempo de traer miles de dólares de regreso a nuestra comunidad! ¡En Puente estamos entusiasmados de ofrecer servicio de impuestos GRATUITOS otra vez este año!

Durante los últimos 11 años, Puente ha ofrecido preparación de declaraciones de impuestos de manera gratuita a la población de la Costa Sur. Con los años, el programa ha traído $794,475 en reembolsos federales y estatales. Este año, Puente brinda este servicio a familias e individuos que ganan $54,000 o menos. Típicamente, este servicio costaría alrededor de $160 cuando lo proporciona un preparador privado. Why I support Puente by Al Fricke

Why I support Puente by Al Fricke

I could say that I support Puente because I like tacos and enchiladas whether served south of the border or in the Pescadero elementary school gym. But, the reasons go much deeper than that. What I really value are the people who grow, harvest, deliver, cook, and serve the food. I like their families, the extended community, and their spirit. And (this is big), the dedication and spirit of the Puente staff is infectious. I am grateful to Puente for letting me help repay a thousand simple genuine kindnesses shown to me while traveling below the border. Through support of Puente, I can provide a tiny flicker of counterbalance to our present national leadership.

I think older retired people like myself have to keep learning and growing or they will shrivel and wrinkle. Which would I rather do, spend a night at Cafecito or watch television until bed? Which is better, experiencing the documentary and discussion following El Otro Lado de Migración or watching the news?

The experience of taking groups of adolescents from Puente for their first sailing adventure always pumps me up. I have so many anecdotes to tell my wife on return. Their eyes are wide open. They hop to it to help and figure things out so quickly. They cannot believe they are steering. They inhale huge sandwiches. They ask penetrating questions. I can tell they are taking mental notes, particularly when they ask me about my career.

So, a better question is why would I not support Puente?

 

Por qué apoyo Puente by Al Fricke

Podría decir que apoyo a Puente porque me gustan los tacos y las enchiladas ya sean servidas al sur de la frontera o en el gimnasio de la primaria en Pescadero. Pero mis razones van más allá de eso. Lo que verdaderamente aprecio son las personas que crecen, cosechan, distribuyen, cocinan, y sirven la comida. Me gustan sus familias y la comunidad extendida y sus espíritus. Además (esto es grande), la dedicación y espíritu que tiene el equipo de Puente es contagioso. Estoy agradecido con Puente por darme la oportunidad de repagar los múltiples actos de generosidad que se me dieron cuando viaje al sur de la frontera. Con el apoyo de Puente puedo proveer un acto de contrapeso al liderazgo nacional actual.

Yo creo que las personas jubiladas, como yo, tienen que seguir aprendiendo y creciendo, sino, se harán viejos. ¿Que preferiría yo, pasar una noche en Cafecito o ver la tele en cama? Qué es mejor, ¿experimentar el documental y discusión de El Otro Lado de Migración o ver las noticias?

La experiencia de llevar a grupos de jóvenes de Puente en su primer viaje de navegación marina siempre me da energía. Tengo tantas anécdotas para contarle a mi esposa cuando regreso. Sus ojos están alertamente vivos. Ellos brincan a la oportunidad de ayudar y aprenden las cosas rápidamente. Ellos no pueden creer que están navegando el barco. Me doy cuenta que están haciendo notas mentales, particularmente cuando me preguntan sobre mi carrera profesional.

Entonces, la pregunta correcta es ¿por qué no, apoyaría a Puente?
