A lending hand sprouts from Puente’s Abriendo Puertas program
It always amazes me when I meet parents who have so much desire to become better parents. They understand that it takes a village to raise a child, and therefore they contribute to their larger community. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Oscar at my latest Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors cohort. Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors is the nation’s first evidence-based comprehensive training program developed for Latino parents with children ages 0-5. This program is a collaboration between Puente and the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District, funded by a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation.
Oscar is a new parent. His sweet baby boy is 4 months old. In talking with Oscar, I learned that he comes from a family that believes in supporting each other, “en las buenas y en las malas” (for better or for worse). I was not surprised when he came to me to offer to help around Puente. He told me that he sees Puente always giving back to this community and he felt it was his turn to give back. In working alongside Oscar, I also learned that he has his own landscaping business. Oscar’s son has been on the waiting list for Puente’s parent co-op Sueños Unidos/United Dreams program for a few months. Despite the fact that he is not yet a participating parent in the co-op, he has volunteered to beautify and maintain Puente’s garden. Oscar and his wife, Ana, are two incredible and thoughtful parents. They both want a better community for their children and they know that a good way to provide this is by getting involved. Oscar loves to garden and create beautiful spaces. He believes that children learn to take care of the earth by getting their hands dirty. He also wants children to be surrounded by natural beauty.
Oscar will start volunteering in the elementary school’s garden. When I spoke with Oscar about the garden’s needs, and to find out if this was something he would be interested in helping with, he very humbly said that “it would be an honor to take care of the children’s garden.” Oscar grew up listening to his mom’s stories about his grandfather. He remembers these stories and they hold a special place in his heart. These family stories were about working in the fields and being generous. He tells me that when we give a little, not only do we feel good about ourselves but most importantly, we make the person we are giving to feel even better. Oscar concludes, “We do not have to give a lot to accomplish this. It can be as little as a smile.” Through the school’s garden, Oscar will be able to share nature’s beauty and his talent with the children in the elementary school. We are thrilled to have him and his wife as parent leaders in our community.

Una mano de ayuda crece del programa Abriendo Puertas de Puente
Siempre me sorprende cuando conoczco a padres de familia que tienen el entusiasmo y empeño de ser mejores padres. Ellos entienden que criar a un niño o niña es un esfuerzo de toda una comunidad y que el hacerlo bien contribuye al bienestar de la comunidad. Recientemente tuve el placer de conocer a Oscar en las nuevas clases de Abriendo Puertas. Abriendo Puertas es un programa de capacitación para padres Latinos con niños de 0-5 años de edad. El programa es reconocido por ser eficaz y basado en evidencia/estudios. Este programa es una colaboración entre el distrito escolar unificado de La Honda-Pescadero, Puente, con fondos proporcionados por la fundación Heising Simons.
Oscar es un papa nuevo. Su dulce pequeño tiene apenas 4 meses. Platicando con Oscar aprendí que el viene de una familia donde se apoyan mucho- como él dice- en las buenas y en las malas. Sabiendo eso, no me sorprendí cuando él ofreció ayudarme en Puente. Oscar compartió que es conmovedor ver como Puente apoya a la comunidad y simplemente quería ofrecer su ayuda a cambio. Trabajando al lado de Oscar aprendí que él tiene su propio negocio de jardinería.
Oscar está tan entusiasmado por nuestra cooperativa de padres que su bebe ya está en la lista de espera de Sueños Unidos. Y aunque él todavía no es padre de la cooperativa, él ya es un voluntario del programa. Oscar y su esposa, Ana, son unos padres increíbles y muy entregrados. Los dos quieren una mejor comunidad para sus hijos y saben que la clave es que ambos estén involucrados.
A Oscar le encanta la jardinería y embellecer los espacios con la belleza natural de un jardín. El piensa que los niños aprenden a apreciar y cuidar a la naturaleza teniendo contacto y ensuciándose las manos con la tierra. Pronto Oscar va a comenzar a trabajar en el jardín de la primaria en Pescadero. Cuando le pregunte si quería hacer esto, el con humildad contestó que sería un honor ayudar con el jardín de los niños.
Oscar tiene buenos recuerdos de su niñez. Él se recuerda que su mamá le contaba de su abuelo y de la vida en el campo. También le recordaba de la importancia de ser generoso. El comparte que cuando damos un poco uno se siente bien, pero también el sentimiento de compartir es algo muy bonito porque compartes algo de ti con otra persona. “No tienes que dar mucho,” dice Oscar. “Puede ser simplemente una sonrisa.” A través del jardín de la escuela, Oscar va a compartir su talento y cariño por la naturaleza. Estamos entusiasmados y muy agradecidos de tener a Oscar y a su esposa Ana como padres líderes en nuestra comunidad.
