Staying in good health has been on everyone’s mind this summer, with the latest COVID-19 variant sending communities into a wary state as case numbers tick higher. That has been true in Pescadero, where Puente held its Health Fair for the first time in two years this July amid a summer surge in COVID-19 cases.
Puente’s last annual Community Health Fair was held in October 2019. The pandemic made public gatherings impossible in 2020 and 2021, and when it returned this July, it was with a mask requirement. No food was served, unlike in previous years.
The event still welcomed a notably good crowd on a gusty Thursday afternoon, with nearly 90 participants eager to take advantage of samples from Steadfast Herbs who provided salves and tinctures, the Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities provided emergency backpacks, Senior Coastsiders shared information about Meals on Wheels, CalFresh San Mateo County helped participants register and/or renew their CalFresh information and Puente Community Health Promoters provided Dental Care Kits.There were also free health screenings, including blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. There was a free CPR class/demonstration, and a traveling spa that offered free massages. Puente’s Community Mental Health and Wellness program staff handed out little ‘Wellness Kits’ with items for stress and anxiety relief, like shower steamer aromatherapy bombs and puzzle booklets.
“There were two massage chairs and one table. I had a massage. Several staff from Puente received one. Anyone who wanted one, got one. So they were really busy,” laughs Maricela Zavala, Puente’s Community Health Associate. “There was definitely a line for those – everybody experiences stress.”
Although it was smaller than previous Community Health Fairs at Puente, this one drew 11 vendor organizations alongside Puente. These included the Red Cross, Oasis Traveling Spa, Senior Coastsiders, Sonrisas Dental Health, the Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities, and CARON (a community program from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office focused on community).
In addition to organizing the event, Puente staffed several tables to enroll participants in programs designed to support their physical and emotional health. Staff from its Community Mental Health and Wellness program were on hand to describe how Puente can help participants manage anxiety and deal with trauma.
Medical staff from the San Mateo County’s field and street medicine program administered the blood pressure and sugar screenings and distributed health information, with Puente on hand to support.
The Community Health Fair has traditionally been a destination for fun, and this year was no exception. Kids lined up for free face painting (above their masks) and adults got access to lots of resources and also test their luck in a raffle drawing.
In order to enter the raffle, participants had to visit each table at the health fair to get a little sticker. Once they had all the stickers, they received a raffle ticket for prizes such as gift cards, Hydro Flasks, jump ropes, quality blender, high-quality lotions, and swag from Puente.
Irma Rodríguez, one of Puente’s Promotoras (Community Health Promoters), had fun staffing a table. She welcomed participants in Spanish, handed out free gift bags from Puente containing face masks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash and sunscreen, and explained how to enter the raffle. “My sister, my daughter and my granddaughters were at the fair this year. And my granddaughter won a sweater from Puente in the raffle!” she laughs.
Amid the lightheartedness of the fair was an important overall message directed at adult participants, including farm workers who were bussed in from local ranches. The message was: check in on your health. Take steps to avoid chronic disease and promote wellness. Those steps include eating fresh, healthy food, obtaining regular screenings, implementing sugar control, and paying attention to mental health and exercise.
The Puente Community Health Fair had useful tools and information reflecting all these aspects of whole-body health. And Zavala says that next year, Puente hopes to also incorporate free vision and hearing screenings.
Rodríguez is a Puente Promotora now, but she has been coming to the Community Health Fair for years, ever since Puente started having them. As a working mother in Pescadero, she says the Health Fair helped her realize that she would benefit from making healthier choices.
“I’ve appreciated all the information that Puente has. I applied for CalFresh and I like Sonrisas,” she says.
Rodríguez has had a number of screenings over the years at the Health Fair, and everything is normal, which is always great to hear. One year, she asked a doctor to examine a bump on her back when Puente was offering cancer screenings. Thankfully, it was nothing to worry about.
The Puente Community Health Fair has also contributed to new lifestyle choices. Rodríguez cut back on the amount of sugar she consumed after seeing a demonstration of just how much sugar was in a bottle of Coke. And she started exercising.
“I did Zumba. I started walking. I walk every Saturday with a group of women, in the morning,” she says.

La Feria de Salud Comunitaria de Puente regresa con exámenes y obsequios
Mantenerse en buen estado de salud ha estado en la mente de todos este verano, con la última variante de COVID-19 poniendo a las comunidades en un estado de cautela a medida que aumenta el número de casos. Eso ha sido cierto en Pescadero, donde Puente celebró su Feria de la Salud por primera vez en dos años este julio en medio de un aumento de casos de COVID-19 en el verano.
La última Feria de Salud Comunitaria anual de Puente se llevó a cabo en octubre de 2019. La pandemia hizo imposible las reuniones públicas en 2020 y 2021, y cuando regresó este julio, fue con el requisito de una máscara. No se sirvió comida, a diferencia de años anteriores.

“Había dos sillones de masaje y una mesa. Tuve un masaje. Varios miembros del personal de Puente recibieron uno. Cualquiera que quisiera uno, tiene uno. Así que estaban muy ocupados”, se ríe Maricela Zavala, Asociada de Salud Comunitaria de Puente. “Definitivamente había una línea para eso: todos experimentan estrés”.
Aunque fue más pequeña que las anteriores Ferias de Salud Comunitaria en Puente, el evento atrajo a 11 organizaciones de proveedores junto con Puente. Estos incluyeron la Cruz Roja, Oasis Traveling Spa, Senior Coastsiders, Sonrisas Dental Health, el Centro para la Independencia de Individuos con Discapacidades y CARON (un programa comunitario de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de San Mateo enfocado en la comunidad).

Rodríguez ahora es Promotora de Puente, pero ha estado viniendo a la Feria de Salud Comunitaria durante años, desde que Puente comenzó a tenerlos. Como madre trabajadora en Pescadero, dice que la Feria de la Salud la ayudó a darse cuenta de que se beneficiaría al tomar decisiones más saludables.
“He apreciado toda la información que tiene Puente. Solicité CalFresh y me gusta Sonrisas”, dice.
Rodríguez ha tenido varias evaluaciones a lo largo de los años en la Feria de la Salud y todo es normal, lo cual siempre es bueno escuchar. Un año, le pidió a un médico que examinara un bulto en su espalda cuando Puente estaba ofreciendo exámenes de detección de cáncer. Afortunadamente, no era nada de qué preocuparse.
La Feria de Salud Comunitaria de Puente también ha contribuido a nuevas opciones de estilo de vida. Rodríguez redujo la cantidad de azúcar que consumía después de ver una demostración de cuánta azúcar había en una botella de Coca-Cola. Y empezó a hacer ejercicio.
“Hice Zumba. Empecé a caminar. Camino todos los sábados con un grupo de mujeres, por la mañana”, dice.
