The Puente 5k Fun Run/Walk is fast approaching! In just 5 days, we’ll be racing, walking, and strolling down North Street and Stage Road on our beautiful Pescadero. As a 3-time runner, this is one of my favorite Puente events, and not just because I’ve worn a different veggie costume each year.

If you’re not yet convinced why you should join us on Sunday, August 20^th at 8am, we’ve got a few more reasons for you.

First, we’ve confirmed that there will be a pie awarded for the two best costumes. Whether you’re feeling like a strawberry or rainbow chard, we want to see your best healthy costumes. Bring on the creativity!

Second, the Fun Run/Walk is a great way to support the community and Puente. With the proceeds from the run, we’re organizing a soccer tournament for South Coast youth as part of our Health Fair on October 8th. Your participation and support helps create more opportunities for fun and healthy community events.

Third, being physically active is key to staying healthy. Aerobic exercise like walking and running improves your heart’s fitness, can decrease blood pressure and cholesterol, help with weight loss management, and strengthen your bones to avoid osteoporosis. Some studies have even shown that walking and running (as part of a healthy lifestyle) can help prevent cancer and slow down aging, as well as improve brain function and vitality, in other words running and walking makes you smarter. In addition, regular exercise is a good way to decrease stress and boost your endorphins, a chemical in your brain that can make you feel happy. So lace up your sneakers and bring on the those healthy smiles!

And finally, for the best reasons, we asked a few longtime participants why they run, and here’s what they had to say:

“I enjoy walking as a family because it shows my children how important walking is. Sometimes when I ask them to go for a walk, they say no, but we all enjoy getting together when the fun run comes around.”

“Every year I look forward to the 5k because I’m a huge fan of Puente and their work. I live in San Francisco and so I don’t get down to Pescadero very often. The 5k has become something I look forward to because it’s a great opportunity to not only support Puente, but I get a fun run in and I love the vegetable costumes! And I look forward to spending the rest of my day attending the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival afterwards and supporting the local economy.

¡La  Carerra / Caminata de 5K de Puente  se acerca rápidamente! En sólo 5 días, estaremos corriendo , trotando, o caminando por North Street y Stage Road en nuestro hermoso Pescadero. He corrido esta carrera  3 veces, y este y es uno de mis eventos favoritos de Puente, y no sólo porque he llevado un disfraz de vegetal diferente cada año.

Si todavía no estás convencido para unirte a nosotros el 20 de agosto a las 8 am, considera las siguientes razones:

En primer lugar, hemos confirmado que habrá premios para los dos mejores disfrazes. Los ganadores recibirán un pay delicioso de Pie Ranch. ¡Traiga su creatividad y exprese su fresa o zanahoria interior con su disfraz saludable!
En segundo lugar, la Carerra /Caminata es una manera divertida y saludable de apoyar a la comunidad y a Puente.

Segundo, con los ingresos de la carrera, estamos planeando implementar un torneo de fútbol para los jóvenes de la Costa Sur como parte de nuestra feria de salud el 8 de Octubre. Su participación y apoyo creará  más oportunidades para eventos divertidos y saludables para la comunidad.

En tercer lugar, la actividad física es clave para mantenerse saludable.  El ejercicio aeróbico como el caminar y correr mejora el estado físico de su corazón, puede disminuir la presión arterial y el colesterol, ayudar con la pérdida de peso y el control, y fortalecer los huesos para evitar la osteoporosis. Algunos estudios han demostrado también que caminar y correr (como parte de un estilo de vida saludable) puede ayudar a prevenir el cáncer y retrasar el envejecimiento, al igual que fortalecer la función y vitalidad mental; en otras palabras el correr te hace más inteligente. Además el ejercicio regular es una buena manera de disminuir el estrés y aumentar sus endorfinas, una sustancia química en su cerebro que puede hacer que se sienta feliz. ¡Así que amarre las cintas de sus tenis y véngase con una gran sonrisa a la carrera/caminata de Puente!
Y por último, por las mejores razones, les preguntamos a unos cuantos participantes por qué participan, y aquí está lo que tenían que decir:

“Me gusta caminar con mi familia, porque le demuestra a mis hijos lo importante que es caminar. A veces, cuando les pido que vayan a dar un paseo, dicen que no, pero todos disfrutamos de estar juntos para dar un paseo cuando llega la diversión “.

“Cada año espero la carrera/caminata divertida porque soy un gran fan de Puente y su trabajo. Yo vivo en San Francisco y así que no frecuento  a Pescadero muy seguido. La Carrera/caminata de Puente se ha

convertido en algo que espero porque es una gran oportunidad para no sólo apoyar a Puente, pero también divertirme en la carrera (me encantan los disfraces de vegetales)! Y espero poder pasar el resto de mi día divirtiéndome en el Festival  de arte y diversión de Pescadero después de la carrera y apoyar a la economía local.

Meaningful and important on the South Coast

Just about five years ago to the day, I walked through the doors of Puente in Pescadero for my first day of work.  It was the end of a 4 month long journey around the country, a journey during which I stumbled upon Puente and Pescadero, an ending I had no way of foreseeing.  In that time, I have seen and been a part of many incredible projects. I’ve also discovered a wonderful place to call home: the South Coast and built community in Pescadero.  At the office, I’ve moved my desk 4 times as we have shifted and changed the spaces to accommodate new staff and services.  Everything at Puente is in a constant state of growth, and my time here has been no different!

As I write this, I find myself in the middle of another similar road trip, away from work for a short break.  My only consistent connection to Puente has been through the newsletters, which have been a great little window into what’s going in the community.  Whether it’s the youth program or the new soccer tournament or some other super cool project or program Puente is working on, those newsletters always bring a smile to my face.

As I travel around the country reconnecting with family and old friends, it’s inevitable that I am asked about work.  So even though I haven’t been in the office at all lately, I’ve been cheerleading Puente all over the country! When you are working hard and in the thick of many different projects, it’s tough to get perspective on what you’re doing. Watching people’s faces and hearing their questions about my work puts an entirely different spin on what we do at Puente, and it has been eye opening in a whole different way than my work is.

On this trip, a friend lent me a book which talks about, among other things, the importance of pausing in life.  Sometimes it’s just for a moment, sometimes for an extended period. The value of those pauses is the exact thing I am getting while traveling: perspective.

The work Puente does is incredibly meaningful and important to our community on the South Coast.  We are fighting a huge fight on a small front.  Traveling has reminded me of just how much work needs to be done across the nation to help people understand where their food comes from and what life is like for those who pick it.  It’s the same battle on a much larger front, which means there is much more to gain as well.  It’s crucial that Puente and other organizations like it exist to serve the immediate needs of many.  The other part of the equation we need to work towards as a country involves big thinking around sensible immigration reform and food system education.  We are doing our part on the South Coast and I wonder how we can spread the word on a bigger stage.  I’ll have to save that for a future newsletter!

Community outreach and engagement is critical to Puente’s mission, and pivotal to all the programs we implement. Please support Puente today and help the South Coast be a healthy, sustainable and inclusive place to live.

El trabajo de Puente:

Tiene gran importancia y de increible significado en la Costa Sur

Hace cinco años, entré por las puertas de Puente en Pescadero para comenzar mi primer día de trabajo. Era el final de una jornada de 4 meses alrededor del país, una jornada en la que me encontré con Puente y Pescadero, que terminó en un final que nunca me imaginé.  En este tiempo he visto y sido parte de muchos proyectos increíbles, he hecho muchas amistades en el trabajo, y he visto a muchos otros ir y venir por esas mismas puertas. También en este tiempo, descubrí un maravilloso lugar que llamo mi hogar y construí una comunidad en Pescadero. En la oficina, he movido mi escritorio cuatro veces para acomodar a más servicios, nuevos compañeros de trabajo y he visto los cambios que han pasado Puente. ¡Todo en Puente está en un estado de crecimiento, y mi tiempo aquí no ha sido diferente!

Al momento que escribo esto, me encuentro en el medio de otra jornada similar a la que me trajo a Puente, lejos del trabajo, tomando un tiempo corto para descansar. Mi única constante conexión a Puente ha sido el boletín semanal, que me ha proveído una pequeña ventana a lo que está pasando en la cominidad. Ya sea el programa de jóvenes o el nuevo torneo de futbol u otro proyecto o programa que está desarrollando Puente, esos boletines siempre me hacen sonreír.

Mientras viajo por el país reconectándome con mi familia y viejos amigos, es inevitable que me pregunten acerca de mi trabajo. ¡Y aunque no he estado presente en la oficina, estoy echándole porras a Puente desde todo el país! Cuando estás trabajando duro y en medio de todos los diferentes proyectos, es difícil obtener la perspectiva de lo que estás haciendo. Viendo las caras de las personas y escuchando sus preguntas acerca de mi trabajo me ha abierto los ojos y cambiado la manera de cómo veo nuestro trabajo en Puente.

En este paseo, un amigo me presto un libro que habla sobre, entre muchas otras cosas, la importancia de tomar una pausa en la vida. A veces es solo por un momento, y a veces por un tiempo más largo. El valor de esas pausas es la cosa exacta que estoy recibiendo mientras viajo: una perspectiva.

El trabajo que hace Puente es de gran importancia y de increíble significado para nuestra comunidad en la Costa Sur. Estamos enfrentando grandes desafíos en un pequeño frente. Viajar me ha recordado cuánto trabajo queda por hacer en toda la nación para ayudar a la gente a entender de dónde proviene su comida y cómo es la vida para aquellos campesinos que cultivan y cosechan nuestros alimentos. Es la misma batalla en un frente mucho más amplio, lo cual significa que hay mucho más que ganar también. Es crucial que Puente y otras organizaciones similares existan para servir a las necesidades inmediatas de muchos trabajadores y sus familias. La otra parte de la ecuación en la que necesitamos trabajar como país implica un gran pensamiento en torno a la reforma migratoria sensata y la educación del sistema alimentario. Estamos haciendo nuestra parte en la Costa Sur y me pregunto cómo podemos difundir la palabra en un escenario más grande. ¡Voy a tener que guardar este concepto para un futuro boletín!

La participación y el alcance comunitario es crítico para realizar la misión de Puente, y esencial para implementar todos nuestros programas. Por favor apoye a Puente hoy y ayude a mejorar la calidad de vida en la Costa Sur.

A new backpack, a happy heart, and a happy child

As summer ends and our thoughts shift to the start of a new school year, Puente prepares for our Annual School Supply Distribution. On August 9^th, two hundred and fifty students from the communities of Pescadero, Loma Mar, La Honda and San Gregorio will come to the Pescadero Elementary School to choose their backpacks and fill them with fresh packs of notebook paper, pencils, pens, flash drives, boxes of crayons, and other essential materials.

Puente has sustained the back to school supplies drive over the years to promote equitable access to education. This initiative would not be possible without the support of our amazing donors and volunteers. The generosity of these individuals directly affects the lives of students and families on the South Coast and continues to bridge our communities together.

Puente’s Annual School Supply Distribution will also benefit a large number of college students this year who have signed up for assistance with materials and school supplies.  As these college bound students begin the new school year away from home, Puente would like to show them that we are proud of them and create some ease in their life, as they embark in a new exciting stage of their education.

A family can easily spend one hundred dollars per year on essential school supplies per child.  For many of our families, this is an overwhelming expense. The idea behind this campaign is to create more equitable access to education by removing some economic barriers for the students and their families.

The backpack distribution day will be a very exciting day for the children and families. Puente staff and volunteers look forward to assisting the children to pick out supplies with a big smile. Who does not love opening the stiff cardboard box that reveals the endless possibilities with a color palette that includes “Maximum Red,” “Mango Tango,” and “Jazzberry Jam.”  There will also be some fun activities, including a jumpy house, blender bike smoothies, a photo booth, healthy snacks, and face painting.  The room will be full of positive energy with the message of love and support for the children of the South Coast community.

Education is a priority area for Puente to improve the quality of life for residents on the South Coast. Although our school supplies online drive is over you can still contribute to backpacks and school supplies today here You can also drop school supplies at our offices. Una mochila nueva, un corazon feliz y un niño contento

Al acercarse el final del verano y nuestros pensamientos cambian hacia el comienzo del año escolar, Puente se prepara para la distribución de mochilas y útiles escolares. El 9 de agosto, 250 estudiantes de las comunidades de Pescadero, Loma Mar, La Honda y San Gregorio vendrán al salón multiusos de la escuela primaria de Pescadero y escogerán su mochila y las llenarán de nuevos cuadernos, cajas de crayolas, y útiles escolares esenciales para el comienzo del año escolar.

Puente ha sostenido el programa de distribución de mochilas y útiles escolares a lo largo de los años para promover el acceso equitativo a la educación. Esta iniciativa no sería posible sin el apoyo de nuestros asombrosos donantes y voluntarios. La generosidad de estos individuos afecta directamente la vida de estudiantes y familias en la Costa Sur y continua a unir a nuestras comunidades.

La distribución de mochilas y útiles también beneficiará a muchos estudiantes que empezaran el colegio ó universidad. Mientras ellos se preparan para un nuevo año escolar, Puente les quiere demostrar a ellos que estamos muy orgullosos de sus logros y queremos darles un poco de facilidad en sus vidas, mientras ellos se preparan para esta nueva etapa de su educación.

Hay cifras que demuestran que una familia puede gastar un promedio de $100.00 al año por cada alumno en útiles escolares esenciales. Para muchas de nuestras familias, este es un gasto abrumador. La idea de esta campaña es de remover las barreras educativas para el estudiante y su familia.

El día de la distribución de las mochilas va a ser un dia feliz para los niños y sus familias para el comienzo a la escuela. El personal de Puente y voluntarios esperan el dia con emoción para ayudarle a los niños y niñas a escojer sus útiles, llenar sus mochilas y ver su carita de felicidad. ¿A quien no le encanta abrir una caja de crayolas nuevas que revela las posibilidades infinitas con una paleta de colores que incluyen los rojos vibrantes y nombres divertidos como “mango tango?” Tambien tendremos actividades divertidas, que incluyen- un brincolin, las bicicletas que hacen batidos, cabina de fotos, refrigerios saludables, y también alguien pintando caritas. El salón estará lleno de energía positive con un mensaje del apoyo y cariño para los niños de la Costa Sur.

La educación es una prioridad para Puente para mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes de la Costa Sur. Aunque nuestra campaña de materiales escolares ya terminó, todavía puede contribuir a esta iniciativa aquí.También puede dejar materiales escolares en nuestras oficinas. ¡Muchas gracias por su apoyo!
