In the small South Coast communities of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar and San Gregorio we often hear of youth who are going off to a college or university to study their career of choice.
Among these students, Jovany Rios is one of the few who has decided to pursue a career in the arts, but he did not always know that this would be his path.
As Puente’s Program Assistant and Artist-in-Residence, Jovany has been working at Puente for the past 9 years, since he started at the age of 15. He is now 23 years old, working part-time to pay for his college tuition at Cañada College and College of San Mateo. When there are art projects at Puente, including flyers and banners to design, Jovany is our go-to person. He also designs the art for the t-shirts for programs like the 5K veggie walk/run, Día de los Muertos and las Posadas.
I asked Jovany:
When did you know you wanted to pursue art?
“I was in 9th grade. I would doodle a lot on my notebook and my classmates would tell me I was really good. After hearing that I began to research different art styles.”
What artist inspired you?
“I was inspired by a South Korea artist, Kim Jung Gi, who would just draw something out of nothing.”
When you were a senior in High School, did you still feel the same about art?
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after I graduated, I barely made it. I took a year off and went to work with my father. I needed to see what I wanted to do. People that I talked to told me that if I wanted to have a career in art I should feel really passionate about it and that it was hard to make a living off it.”
When Jovany enrolled at Cañada College he started taking some general education courses and any art class he could take to see if he was still interested. He took life drawing, and later took a class on black and white photography and color theory. Jovany wanted to get more experience, learn about the principles of art, shapes, and color. He also became more involved in the local arts community through the South Coast Artists’ Alliance.
He would see the invitations to their annual Art Show during the weekend of the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival, and three years ago, he joined as an artist. Before that, he did not know there were so many artists that lived within the community that exhibited and sold their art.
Puente is also very fortunate to have be in partnership with the South Coast Artists’ Alliance. They have supported Puente with an art grant for a mural at Puente, and a grant for the Ballet Folklórico program. They will host an internship site this summer for one Puente Youth.
“We are a community organization and we want to make sure that we are reaching out to the new generation of young artists, for them to enjoy art, support their creativity and outreach to the community who is not connected to our non-juried art show. I’m very excited to see Jovany’s art and have the opportunity to watch him grow,” says Shannon Webb, Pescadero resident and South Coast Artists’ Alliance Outreach Coordinator.
As for Jovany, he expects to graduate in the spring of 2019 with an Associate’s Degree in Painting and Digital Art and to pursue a Bachelors of Art in Graphic Design. His schools of interest are San Jose State University, Cal Arts and Rhode Island School of Design.

Convirtiendo una Pasión en una Carrera
En las pequeñas comunidades de la Costa Sur de Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar y San Gregorio, a menudo escuchamos de jóvenes que se van a un colegio o universidad para estudiar su carrera de elección.

Cuando Jovany se inscribió en Cañada College, comenzó a tomar algunos cursos de educación general y cualquier clase de arte que pudiera tomar para ver si todavía estaba interesado. Tomó dibujo de la vida, y después una clase de fotografía en blanco y negro y otra de teoría del color. Jovany quería obtener más experiencia, aprender sobre los principios del arte, las formas y el color. También se involucró más en la comunidad artística local a través de la Alianza de Artistas de la Costa Sur.
Veía las invitaciones a la exposición anual de arte durante el fin de semana del Festival de Artes y Diversión de Pescadero, y tres años atrás, se unió como artista. Antes de eso, no sabía que había tantos artistas que vivían dentro de la comunidad que exhibían y vendían su arte. Puente también es muy afortunado de haber estado en sociedad con la Alianza de Artistas de la Costa Sur. Han apoyado a Puente con una beca de arte para un mural en Puente, y apoyaron el programa de Ballet Folklórico desde su inicio. Ellos también van a proporcionar una posición de trabajo en Alianza de Artistas de la Costa Sur para un joven de Puente este verano.
