Saúl Armenta came to Pescadero from Michoacán at the tender age of 20, intending to stay a few years, make some money as a farm worker, and return home to take care of his family. If you had shown that 20-year-old a vision of his present self at 37, he wouldn’t have believed his eyes.

Seventeen years on, Saúl still lives in Pescadero. That formerly isolated young man, who arrived not knowing a soul or a word of English, stands as a leader among newcomers and an example of their own potential. After years of taking ESL through Puente, Saúl speaks enough English to be self-employed. He is surrounded by close friends who respect him.

He is also one of Puente’s best-loved and most loyal volunteers.

“He doesn’t have any reason to be around Puente as much as he is. Especially on the weekends. He could be making money or having fun and yet, he is here helping so often,” laughs Rita Mancera, Puente’s Executive Director.

But that’s Saúl for you. Name a Puente program he attended: he’s the one who stayed late to help clean up afterwards. Point to a piece of office furniture or the carpet, or the sink — there’s a good chance Saúl has moved, fixed, or installed it with his own tools, just because he wanted to help.

He has also taken it upon himself to proselytize Puente’s ESL classes to the Mexican newcomers in his circle. He has enrolled so many of them that Puente’s teachers have lost count. “Oh, you’re one of Saúl’s,” they say with a smile.

What accounts for Saúl’s attitude? “My mom and dad raised me old-fashioned. I’m in the belief that you help and God helps you,” he says, humbly.

But there’s more to this story. Sit down with Saúl and you will notice eyes that twinkle and an impish grin, which he sometimes hides behind a hand when he speaks. He has a competitive streak and takes pride in accomplishing his goals – and then tackling new ones. He developed his English to a point where he could graduate from farm work to yard work and carpentry, and he has already built a large house in Mexico with the money he earned (it waits for him, empty; he pays someone to clean it).

“I like to be competitive and do well. I want things to be fair. When I have a goal to reach, I do it without cheating,” says Saúl.

Growing up in Michoacan, Saúl and his older brother Cesar competed for everything – their parents’ approval, or the best job. Their competition lasted into adulthood. Ask him now who’s winning, and he’ll pause. “I don’t know,” he says. “It’s been 13 years since I’ve seen him.”

Here in Pescadero, he playfully competed with Puente staff members Ben Ranz and Charlea Binford when the three of them went to visit ranches to try to enroll people in Puente’s adult education programs.

“To convince [them] to come to school is really hard. I have to fight with them, but I’m happy to do that,” he says, laughing.

It’s hard for anyone to say no to someone so fearless and persuasive, says Ben Ranz. “It’s compelling for him to go up to a 20-year-old guy on a Brussels sprouts field and say, ‘Look man, I was you… and now I have this great job and two cars, and you can be me too.’”

For his extraordinary efforts on behalf of the community, Saúl received Puente’s Outstanding Volunteer Award at the 2016 Fall Harvest Fundraiser.

“He’s just a caring, loyal guy,” says Ranz, Puente’s Community Outreach Coordinator. The two men are close friends who initially bonded over a love of tinkering with cars. They have fixed and built a lot of things together at Puente. “It’s something we have in common – it feels good to be wanted and needed,” Ranz says. “He’s just a really dependable friend. I feel lucky to have gotten to know him.”

Saúl was an obvious choice for the Puente award, but he was shocked by the recognition. “It was big for me. It was so sudden. I like to stand out, but I didn’t know I would stand out this much,” he says.

Saúl has four sisters and five brothers. Some live in California. The last time the whole family was reunited was in 2001, when their father passed away. Things changed after that. “My first goal was to work here in Pescadero and return after three years. When my dad died, my goal changed to helping my mom and my younger siblings,” he says. Saúl’s youngest sister and mother have medical issues. He has paid for surgeries for both of them.

It was never Saúl’s plan to build a life in Pescadero. But 17 years later, his circle of friends is a testament to the ability to do just that.

**********
